In the everyday life of our dominantly scientifically oriented culture, people who devote their lives to occult theory and practice appear somewhat strange and out of place. Nevertheless, even in the 21^st century there are magicians in our society who are engaged with occult forces. This book is concerned with exactly these people. Empirically it is based on narrative and topic-centred interviews which give a detailed account on biographical background, the ‘training career of the magician’, and various aspects of magical practices and the respective, rather subjective understanding of magic. The differentiated, and often surprising empirical findings are supplemented by a systematic introduction into today’s relevant schools of magic and the most important forms of magical practices in the German-speaking area.
