Phenomenology and Multiple-Factor Explanation of Non-Ordinary Collective Phenomena
Pilot study
The task of this pilot study was to prepare a case collection about the diverse forms of collective phenomena in which paranormal factors or anomalistic incidents could play a role. The focus was on the question of the significance of the dimension "individual – group – mass" for anomalistic incidents. A study of the specialist literature enabled the definition of seven sub-groups of corresponding phenomena (1) collective-synchronous altered states of consciousness, (2) spiritual healing, (3) collective visions, (4) psychic epidemics, (5) collective phenomena in connection with death and dying, (6) psychokinetic phenomena and (7) public miracles.
A comprehensive overview was compiled for these groups containing specific individual examples, a description of the phenomenology and contexts as well as explanatory models. Considerations regarding dimensions of collective phenomena in terms of the pragmatics of research did not lead to the definition of a directly plausible subject of research. Only the type of mass media induced phenomena seemed to be viable for future research projects. However, as this concerns currently occurring and non-predictable incidents, only a possible catalogue of questions without a specific study design was developed so far.
