[Wicca. European ethnological inquiries into neo-pagan witches in the German-speaking area]

wiccatum

With this study the discipline of European ethnology departs into a new field within religion research. This comprehensive analysis of modern Wicca focuses on the so called neo-pagan witches and their religion. Based on narrative interviews, the book introduces the magical, ritual and everyday world of this unusual belief. Wiccans report on what made them first believe, how their religious life is structured, and why the call themselves witches. Based on extensive material, the everyday reality of Wiccans, the historical and religious background of their belief systems, their feast and cult practices as well as the dealing of society with this belief system is systematically analysed. A dense picture of a neo-pagan religion whose members have to prove themselves in their belief and their lifestyle every day in an environment of a sometimes more and sometimes less tolerant Christian society emerges.
